The San Diego Police Department has reported that two police officers were shot near the 3800 block of Boston Avenue, about 2 miles southwest of downtown San Diego.
Both officers were taken to local hospitals. One of the officers died upon arrival to the Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista. According to hospital sources, the officer was dead on arrival due to numerous gun shot wounds.
The other unidentified officer is in guarded condition after undergoing surgery early Monday morning. Authorities within the San Diego Police department have not released the names of the two officers at this time.
Very limited information has been made available as of early Friday morning, however Fox News is reporting that the shooting occurred around 11:00pm PST, Thursday evening during a gang force initiated traffic stop near the 3800 block of Boston Avenue, about 2 miles southwest of downtown San Diego.
One suspect, a Hispanic male, was arrested near the scene who was apparently shot by one or both of the fallen officers. According to a source with the San Diego Police department, late Thursday evening an extensive manhunt was conducted by local authorities searching the surrounding area around the traffic stop. Early Friday morning the manhunt was called off, after detectives discovered that the suspect in custody lied to first respondents about a second suspect allegedly shooting the two officers. The shooting appears to be the result of the suspect resisting arrest.
Numerous claims on social media that the police were ambushed at the scene were debunked by our source within the SDPD, who told us that both of the officers are part of a gang task force that work inside the Barrio. The suspect they have in custody was wanted for questioning for shooting at police officers in the Jamacha/Lomitahe area of San Deigo, about 4 miles east of the barrio, on May 3rd of this year. Our source believes that faced with arrest the suspect chose to shoot it out with the two officers–he is undergoing surgery now for two gun shot wounds in his chest.
The 3800 block of Boston avenue where the shooting occurred, is on the outskirts of the Barrio Logan area of San Diego, an area that is considered a high drug trafficking, gang and violent crime area. In January 2013, a police officer was shot and killed by a wanted couple residing in the area.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters early Friday that the investigation into the shooting was ongoing, and that the department was “heartbroken” and would be mourning the officer who died.
“They’re out there every day like all of our officers trying to make sure that our great citizens are kept safe,” she said, “and that’s what they were doing tonight.”
